Bay of Plenty Police Disrupt Illegal Street Racing,Make Arrests
Tauranga,New zealand – August 31,2025 - Bay of Plenty police have shut down multiple gatherings of “antisocial road users” overnight,resulting in arrests,vehicle impoundments,and the issuance of infringement notices.The operation targeted dangerous driving behavior including speeding, sustained loss of traction, and the use of unroadworthy vehicles.
A 19-year-old man is scheduled to appear in Tauranga District Court on september 5th, facing charges of driving while suspended and resisting police. Two additional individuals will appear in court at a later date.
During the operation, police conducted 1000 breath tests, identifying four drivers involved in the gatherings who were over the legal alcohol limit. An additional nine members of the public were also found to be driving over the limit at checkpoints.
police deemed twenty vehicles unsafe to drive,issuing them with pink or green stickers. Four vehicles were impounded, and 31 infringement notices were issued.
“Illegally modified and unroadworthy vehicles travelling on roads at speed and performing sustained losses of traction is a quick way for someone to end up seriously injured, or worse,” said a police spokesperson.”This driving behaviour is dangerous for everyone involved; drivers, passengers, spectators, the public, and our staff.”
Authorities stated they are committed to zero tolerance for this type of activity. “Our message is clear – we have zero-tolerance for this behaviour and the havoc it creates,” the spokesperson added. “If you are participating in antisocial road user activities, expect to see us on the roads taking action.”
