Pride Parade Marred by Hate Crime in Ballymena

A planned Pride parade in Ballymena was overshadowed by a disturbing act of hate, as local authorities launched an investigation into an overnight incident. The event, intended to celebrate diversity and inclusion, was targeted, sparking condemnation from political leaders and community members.

Investigation Launched After Slurry Incident

Police are treating an incident as a hate crime that occurred overnight in Ballymena, Northern Ireland, before a scheduled Pride parade. A 19-year-old man was subsequently charged with criminal damage, along with other offenses.

“This is a disgraceful act, clearly intended to disrupt Ballymena’s first pride parade and intimidate those taking part,”

According to a 2023 report, hate crimes motivated by sexual orientation are on the rise, with a 10% increase compared to the previous year (Source: DOJ).

Parade Carries On Amidst Show of Solidarity

Despite the incident, the Pride parade proceeded as planned in the afternoon. Hundreds of participants marched through the town, displaying rainbow flags and banners. A counter-protest also took place, with some individuals carrying religious messages.

The clean-up operation was carried out by local businesses and people. The parade’s organizers declared it an effort to celebrate diversity, unity, and inclusion.

The Alliance MLA, Sian Mulholland, stated the event was a historic moment for the town and that no hatred would overshadow the message of solidarity and inclusion. Doug Beattie, UUP MLA, also condemned the actions, labeling them as appalling and stupid.

The PSNI had promised an increased presence to ensure safety, emphasizing support for the community. Scott Cuthbertson from The Rainbow Project described the incident as “disgusting,” thanking those who helped with the clean-up.

In the wake of this act, the community is showcasing resilience and solidarity. The event demonstrates the ongoing need for dialogue, understanding, and support for the LGBTQ+ community. The police reiterated their commitment to ensuring fairness and respect, especially regarding hate crimes.
