Badminton legend Lee Chong Wei has welcomed his third child, expressing gratitude to his wife for her enduring sacrifices, according to a report from Yahoo News Malaysia.

The former world number one, who battled nose cancer and underwent treatment in Taiwan, shared the news publicly, highlighting the importance of family and the strength derived from his wife’s support. He stated, “badmintonShaped my life. I hope that through the Lee Chong Wei Cup, we can provide a stage for children from different backgrounds to express themselves. Sports is not only about competition, but also about building a strong personality…”

Lee Chong Wei’s journey back to health has been closely followed by fans worldwide. News of his cancer diagnosis in 2019 prompted an outpouring of support, and his determination to return to the sport inspired many. Although he ultimately retired in 2019, his influence on badminton remains significant.

Beyond his personal life, Lee Chong Wei has recently been offered a mentorship role with the Malaysian badminton team, as reported by Milano Cortina 2026. This position reflects a continued commitment to the sport and a desire to nurture the next generation of Malaysian athletes. The specifics of his role are currently undisclosed, but it is expected to involve guiding and supporting players as they prepare for future competitions.

Lee Chong Wei’s career was marked by intense rivalry with Lin Dan of China, a competition described in a 2012 New York Times article as one where “more than one gold is in offing.” Although he never secured an Olympic gold medal, Lee Chong Wei achieved numerous other accolades, including multiple Super Series titles and a silver medal at the 2008 Beijing Olympics and the 2012 London Olympics.

The Lee Chong Wei Cup, referenced in his recent statement, is intended to provide opportunities for young athletes, regardless of their background, to participate in sports and develop their character. Details regarding the cup’s structure and implementation have not yet been released.
