Babette van Veen and Katja Schuurman Reflect on Past Successes and Loss of Bandmate Guusje Nederhorst
Thirty years after topping the charts as members of the girl group Good Times, Bad times, Babette van Veen and Katja Schuurman are revisiting their past. The duo, known for hits including “Drops,” recently returned to Mallorca – the location of their iconic music video shoot - as part of a new docuseries, Breathlessness.
“It is special that we are now suddenly together again and diving into that period,” shared one of the artists. While reminiscing brings joy, the absence of their former bandmate, Guusje Nederhorst, who passed away twenty years ago, is deeply felt.
“There are so many cheerful things to remember, but also heavier things,” katja schuurman admitted, acknowledging the complexities of their shared history. Despite individual differences, the three women forged a strong bond. “We have been through so much together, seen so much of each othre…that, no matter how different we were, we really were a trinity,” Babette van Veen explained. “Truly one for all and all for one.”
speaking with Breathlessness program maker Linda Hakeboom, Babette described the experience of returning without Guusje as “very ambivalent.” ”On the one hand,it has been a long time,so a lot of time has passed. And conversely, we also have a lot of splendid memories to look back on,” she said, becoming visibly emotional alongside katja.
“You would of course have preferred her to be there,” Babette continued, “but the fact that she is not here, and that we are having fun together and that we are allowed to be here, that is something that can make you very happy. Of course you would have preferred it differently, but that’s life.”
Breathlessness premieres every Friday on HBO Max, offering viewers a closer look at Babette and Katja’s journey through memory and loss.
