Azerbaijan Embassy Kyiv: Baku Condemns Shelling as Targeted Attack

Azerbaijan’s President Ilham Aliyev has accused Russia of deliberately targeting his country’s diplomatic missions in Kyiv, stating that Azerbaijani diplomats were struck three times by shelling. The accusation, made on Sunday, February 15, 2026, marks a significant escalation in tensions between Baku and Moscow following the attacks.

Aliyev initially suggested the first strike “could have been an accident,” but subsequently shared the coordinates of the Azerbaijani embassy with Russian authorities, according to reports. Despite this, further attacks occurred, leading Aliyev to characterize the incidents as a targeted assault. “Here’s a targeted attack on Azerbaijani diplomatic missions,” Aliyev emphasized.

Currently, there are 280 flights per week between Baku’s Heydar Aliyev International Airport (GYD) and Kyiv, though direct flights are unavailable. Travelers must utilize routes with layovers. Kiwi.com lists Turkish Airlines, Wizz Air, Pegasus, Buta Airways, and Bees Airline as popular carriers for travel between the two cities, though itineraries to Kyiv are currently unavailable due to the ongoing war in Ukraine. The airline Bees Airline requires a passport during booking, while Buta Airways does not.

The distance between Baku and Kyiv is approximately 1,867 kilometers, according to Aviasales.az. Cheapest one-way tickets are currently priced around 113 €, while round-trip fares start at 258 €.

As of February 15, 2026, neither the Russian government nor the Ukrainian government has publicly responded to Aliyev’s accusations. The Azerbaijani Foreign Ministry has not issued a statement detailing any planned diplomatic responses or requests for investigation beyond the initial sharing of coordinates.
