Australia Outraged After Israel Rejects Criminal Probe into Zomi Frankcom Killing
Australian Foreign Minister Penny Wong expressed official outrage after the Israel Defense Forces decided against launching a criminal investigation into the killing of aid worker Zomi Frankcom and six colleagues in Gaza. Frankcom, an Australian aid worker with World Central Kitchen, died alongside three British nationals, a Palestinian, a Polish national, and a dual US-Canadian citizen during an April 2024 air strike.
Diplomatic Rejection and Ambassador Summoning
Following the announcement, Penny Wong summoned Israeli Ambassador Hillel Newman, stating that the decision fell far short of expected accountability. According to Penny Wong, the outcome felt especially insulting because it occurred on World Humanitarian Day, despite Israel Defense Forces admissions that the strikes were the result of serious failures to follow IDF procedures, mistaken identification and errors in decision-making. Ambassador Newman defended the investigation during his meetings, maintaining that there was no criminal intention and therefore no criminal responsibility for the deaths.
The Australian government pressed for further transparency, pointing to several unresolved questions. Penny Wong noted that authorities had still not handed over drone audio from the operation, despite requests. She also criticized the internal disciplinary measures—which included removing two officers from their positions and reprimanding three others—as insufficient for the death of seven people.
Family and Organization Demands
Zomi Frankcom’s family released a statement expressing deep disappointment over the military’s decision, stating they do not believe this to be accurate and continue to call for an independent investigation. World Central Kitchen echoed those demands, asserting that the military investigation conflates different timelines and events, muddies the story, and shifts the blame for the IDF’s illegal conduct. The organization stated that the military possessed full visual clarity, knew the team was unarmed and posing a threat to nobody, and knew the team’s movements, identities and activities in advance during the extended, multiple airstrikes.
Ambassador Newman rejected political attacks on the report clearing soldiers, insisting that there was no intention to kill innocent civilians. The Israel Defense Forces stated in its findings that while serious failures occurred, including the convoy deviating from the coordinated route and the misidentification of an armed guard as a Hamas fighter, the decisions of the commanders did not raise reasonable suspicion of criminal misconduct.
Unresolved Diplomatic Stance
The Australian government indicated it will continue pressing Israel for justice regarding the killings of Frankcom and her colleagues.
