Gerald Butler Immersed Himself in Role for New film, Woke Up Mid-Shoot in his Underwear
To prepare for a recent role, actor Gerard Butler took method acting to a new level, spending a night alone in the film’s set-a Village apartment-to fully inhabit his character. “For one night, I had the whole apartment to myself,” butler said. “I played music, I danced around, and I ate Chinese food in there. It made me feel like I really lived there. I slept there all night, and I woke up to the crew coming in while I was in my underwear.”
Butler’s efforts to make the set feel like a real home proved effective. “there are many things that conspire against you when you’re making a movie,” he explained. “So the more I can do to trick myself, the more vital it is.” He also focused on the physical aspects of the role, aiming for the build of a former athlete.
To achieve the “certain thickness” required for the character, Butler combined workouts with a surprising dietary addition: beer. However, his approach didn’t entirely align with the director’s vision. Darren Aronofsky reportedly asked Butler to “work a little less hard and to relax a little bit” because he desired “looseness” in the performance, as he told Variety. The beer consumption,it seems, was intended to facilitate that looseness.
