Attack on Walking Track Prompts Safety Concerns
Assault Shakes Community’s Sense of Security
Following an assault on a popular walking track, locals are expressing heightened concern about their safety. The attack occurred on Wednesday, June 18, at Porirua’s Rangituhi / Colonial Knob track, prompting both police investigation and community introspection.
The assault took place approximately halfway up the stairs of the walking track around 3:30 p.m. Police continue to seek the person responsible for the incident. Anita Baker, the Mayor of Porirua, shared that residents are worried.
“People go up there every day, and people want to be able to feel safe going on their walks, even if they are by themselves. So there is a bit of concern,” Baker stated. Currently, many are choosing to walk in pairs, rather than alone.

Community Response and Safety Measures
Ria Greening, who regularly uses the track, indicated she would not cease her walks. She walked the track the morning after the assault. However, she is contemplating additional safety precautions, such as using walking poles.
Greening is also encouraging fellow track users to watch out for one another and to share their walking plans with family. Barbara Edmonds, a Member of Parliament, expressed distress regarding the event, and her thoughts for the victim.
“People deserve to feel safe wherever they are. The ‘Knob’ is a very popular track and I’ve personally used that track many times. I know our Porirua community will be doing all that they can to support each other so we can reclaim what is an important space for all.”
