Atari Acquires Majority Stake in Thunderful Group, Signaling Resurgence Ambitions
STOCKHOLM, SWEDEN – In a notable move aimed at bolstering its presence in the contemporary video game landscape, atari has acquired a controlling stake in Thunderful Group AB for 50 million Swedish kroner (approximately 4.5 million euros). The transaction, which grants Atari 82.6% of Thunderful’s shares, positions the iconic gaming brand to leverage thunderful’s established portfolio of intellectual property and progress studios.
Thunderful Group, a prominent entity in game development and publishing, brings a valuable collection of approximately twenty intellectual property rights to the Atari umbrella. Notable titles within this portfolio include the critically acclaimed Steamworld series, Islanders, Lost In Random, and Vampire’s Fall. Furthermore, Thunderful operates five internal development studios, which will now become integral to Atari’s operational structure.
Despite the strategic acquisition, the immediate outlook for Thunderful is marked by a necessary restructuring. An official statement from Atari indicates a plan to reorganize Thunderful’s publishing and development activities. This initiative is designed to reduce the cost base and improve operating cash flow, a common business practise that often involves workforce adjustments and potential consolidation of studio operations.
the acquisition is contingent upon approval from Thunderful’s shareholders at an unusual general meeting, scheduled for on or around August 28, 2025. Though, with Atari already holding an absolute majority of shares, the approval is widely anticipated. This strategic investment underscores atari’s commitment to re-establishing itself as a major player in the dynamic and competitive video game industry.
