Astronaut Mike Fincke Details Sudden Medical Emergency on ISS

March 29, 2026 Rachel Kim – Technology Editor Technology

The first medical evacuation from the International Space Station (ISS) was triggered by an astronaut’s sudden inability to speak, NASA revealed Friday. American astronaut Mike Fincke, 59, experienced the alarming symptom even as eating a meal on January 7th, prompting an emergency return to Earth for himself and his three crewmates.

Fincke and his team had been aboard the ISS for 167 days when the incident occurred, weeks before their scheduled return. The unexpected medical event forced NASA to curtail the mission and bring the crew home on January 15th, marking the first time in the ISS’s 25-year history that a crew was evacuated due to a medical emergency.

For weeks, the identity of the ailing astronaut remained confidential. Fincke broke his silence last month to preempt speculation, stating at the time that his condition had stabilized quickly thanks to the swift actions of his crewmates and NASA medical personnel. He described the onset of the issue as “a incredibly, very swift lightning flash.”

In interviews this week, Fincke elaborated on the experience, explaining that he felt no pain but immediately alarmed his colleagues with his sudden loss of speech. “Within seconds, everyone was in action,” he said, noting that he felt well again within 20 minutes and continues to feel healthy.

Medical experts remain baffled by the incident. While a heart attack has been ruled out, and Fincke confirmed he was not choking, the underlying cause remains unknown. “I’ve been lucky to always be super healthy. This came as a big surprise to everyone,” Fincke stated.

The abrupt return to Earth also meant the cancellation of a planned spacewalk for Fincke and fellow NASA astronaut Zena Cardman, which would have been Cardman’s first. Fincke expressed regret over the lost opportunity, but his crewmates reassured him, telling him, “This wasn’t on you. This was the space station, right?”

Fincke has logged a total of 549 days in space across four missions, placing him fourth among NASA astronauts for cumulative time spent off-world. He has also completed nine spacewalks, totaling 48 hours and 37 minutes.

The incident has prompted further investigation into the potential health risks associated with long-duration spaceflight. Doctors are exploring whether the prolonged exposure to weightlessness may have contributed to Fincke’s condition, despite his extensive experience in space.

As of Saturday, NASA has not released further details regarding the ongoing medical investigation, and the cause of Fincke’s sudden speech loss remains a mystery.
