Phoenix, AZ – A swift-moving storm system brought showers, dust, and the threat of flash flooding to the Phoenix area on Labor Day, prompting safety reminders from the Glendale Fire Department. residents are bracing for potentially hazardous conditions as the monsoon season continues.
The National Weather Service reported the arrival of the storm, which poses risks from strong winds and heavy rainfall. Captain Ashley Losch of the Glendale Fire Department emphasized the potential for service disruptions, including water, power, and gas outages. “Most Valley residents know how quickly and furiously storms can move in and out, bringing strong winds, dust, rain, and flash flooding,” she stated.
To prepare for these conditions,GFD advises residents to: identify a safe room - an interior space free of windows, skylights, and glass doors; keep flashlights with extra batteries readily available; stock non-perishable food requiring no cooking or refrigeration; maintain a supply of at least one gallon of clean water per person; ensure backup power for essential medical devices; have a means to charge cell phones; and keep a first aid kit accessible.
Authorities also warn against driving through flooded areas – as little as 10 inches of water can sweep a vehicle away – and avoiding washes altogether. If rising waters threaten, residents should seek higher ground. Downed power lines are also a serious hazard, with the potential to energize the ground up to 200 feet.residents are urged to keep pets indoors during the storm.
