Apple Targets 2027 for Smart Glasses, 2028 for XR Headset, Analyst Predicts
CUPERTINO, CA – Apple is poised to enter the smart glasses market with a projected 2027 launch, followed by an XR headset in 2028, according to analyst Ming-Kuo Kuo. The company is reportedly making strides in developing a dedicated chip for these devices, potentially offering both AR and non-AR versions.
These forthcoming devices represent Apple’s strategic move into the rapidly evolving spatial computing landscape, positioning it to compete directly with Meta and its Ray-Ban and Oakley smart glasses. Kuo forecasts initial shipments of the smart glasses to reach 3 to 5 million units upon release.
The smart glasses are expected to feature a range of capabilities including multiple frame and material options, voice control, gesture recognition, audio playback, camera functionality, video recording, and AI-powered environmental sensing. Additionally, Apple is developing a seperate “display accessory” slated for potential release, which would connect to devices like the iPhone to display content.
The 2028 XR headset will share voice and gesture control features with the smart glasses, but will also incorporate a color display. Apple’s continued investment in these technologies signals a long-term commitment to augmented and virtual reality, building on existing work in the field and potentially reshaping how users interact with digital content.
