Apple Watch for Kids: Setup, Family Sharing & Schooltime Guide

February 11, 2026 Rachel Kim – Technology Editor Technology

Apple Watch Family Setup, introduced in 2020, allows children without iPhones to use an Apple Watch, and recent experiences highlight the process of setting up and managing a watch for a child, including navigating potential issues with content transfer and parental controls.

The process begins with unpairing a watch, which is intended to erase all content, and settings. However, one user found that this did not fully clear the device, requiring a manual reset through the watch’s settings: Settings > General > Reset > Erase All Content and Settings. Once reset, the watch prompts the user to “Bring iPhone Near Apple Watch.” Utilizing the Watch app on the iPhone, a user can then select “Set Up for a Family Member.” The iPhone’s camera is used to scan the slowly moving animation on the watch face to initiate pairing, or pairing can be done manually.

Following pairing, a passcode is selected, and the child is chosen from the iPhone’s Family Sharing list. Cellular service can be continued, and the setup then mirrors that of a standard Apple Watch, including features like Ask to Buy – preventing app store purchases without parental approval – Messages, and Emergency SOS. According to Apple’s documentation, the Watch app on the iPhone is the central control point for managing watch settings, installing apps, and synchronizing data between the watch and the iPhone.

Parents can also limit the contacts available on the child’s watch. This requires enabling Contacts in iCloud settings on the iPhone (Settings > iCloud > Contacts) and then configuring Communication Limits within Screen Time (Settings > Screen Time > Family Member > Communication Limits). Managing contacts requires the child’s permission, requested and approved directly on their watch. Once granted, contacts can be added and renamed – for example, “Dad” can be changed to “Grandpa.”

Schooltime, a feature resembling Work Focus for adults, can be activated to block apps and complications during school hours, while still allowing emergency calls. The setup tutorial guides users through configuring Schooltime, but it can also be managed later through the iPhone’s Watch app (All Watches > Your Child’s Watch > Schooltime > Edit Schedule). Schedules can be customized to align with school hours and after-school activities, and while children can manually exit Schooltime using the digital crown, parents can review Schooltime reports on their iPhone.

Overall management of the child’s watch is accessible through the iPhone’s Watch app (Watch > All Watches > Family Watches > Your Kid’s Apple Watch), allowing parents to install updates and adjust settings. Apple provides a comprehensive list of available settings, including health details, Medical ID configuration, and smart reply editing. The Apple Watch app, available on the App Store, is a free utility for iPhone users to pair and sync their Apple Watch, customize watch faces, and manage app notifications.

Beyond the technical setup, users report customizing watch faces and purchasing child-specific watch bands as immediate next steps. The primary motivations for providing a child with an Apple Watch often include location tracking via Uncover My and enabling communication through phone calls and Messages.
