Apple Watch Fitness: New Features, Workout Buddy & Best Apps 2024

Apple is expanding the health and fitness capabilities of its Watch, adding features like hypertension notifications and AI-powered workout programs, positioning the device as a competitor to established fitness trackers from Garmin and Suunto.

The company has been steadily investing in the Apple Watch as a health device, with CEO Tim Cook stating the watch has the potential to save lives. New features include hypertension notifications, designed to alert users to potentially irregular heart rhythms, and enhanced sleep tracking. Whereas a long-anticipated noninvasive continuous glucose monitor remains under development, Apple has focused on incremental improvements to existing health tracking features.

Alongside health monitoring, Apple has introduced AI-driven workout tools. “Workout Buddy” within the Fitness+ app provides real-time feedback during exercise, though user reception has been mixed. Apple has likewise broadened the availability of Fitness+ and launched new workout programs, including three-week strength training routines. The Apple Watch’s data compatibility extends beyond Apple’s ecosystem, integrating with numerous third-party fitness and workout applications.

The competitive landscape in the smartwatch market includes Garmin, which offers models like the Forerunner 55 starting at $200, undercutting the price of Apple’s entry-level Apple Watch SE 3. Garmin’s strength lies in detailed performance metrics, extended battery life, and tools geared towards outdoor activities. According to Tom’s Guide, Garmin and Suunto are well-established brands alongside Apple in the sports watch market, with models like the Garmin Fenix 6 and Suunto 9 Baro catering to serious athletes.

Apple Watch data is compatible with a wide range of fitness apps, offering users flexibility in their workout tracking. However, older Apple Watch models are becoming obsolete; watchOS 26 is only compatible with the second-generation SE and newer, rendering earlier models unsupported. The Series 1, 2, and 3 are no longer recommended due to limited functionality and lack of current software support.

Garmin watches, in contrast, are known for their detailed performance tracking, including metrics like Training Readiness, Body Battery, and HRV Status. While Garmin’s data analysis can sometimes be overly cautious, flagging rest weeks as potential detraining periods, the depth of information provided is a key differentiator. Apple has been improving its running and cycling features, but generally maintains a more lifestyle-focused approach.

Recent testing of GPS accuracy between the Garmin 970 and Apple Watch Ultra 3, alongside models from Polar and Suunto, revealed surprising results. The Garmin FR970 achieved joint-best accuracy in a challenging 10-mile course in London, while the Apple Watch Ultra 3 experienced some struggles.
