Ronald Koeman Jr disputes penalty after Telstar defeat to Feyenoord
Telstar goalkeeper Ronald Koeman Jr. lashed out at referee Jeroen Manschot on ESPN following a 4-3 defeat to Feyenoord, disputing a critical second-half penalty awarded to the league leaders.
Penalty Decision Sparks Goalkeeper Outburst
Just over fifty minutes into the match, referee Jeroen Manschot pointed to the penalty spot for an alleged handball by Telstar defender Abdelnour Soualhia. Following a lengthy video assistant referee review, the decision stood. Sem Steijn converted the spot-kick to put Feyenoord ahead 4-2.
Watching the replays on ESPN, Koeman Jr. strongly contested the ruling. “Oh, come on! If the ball hits him, it hits his head first,” the goalkeeper said. He referenced a recent explanation from refereeing chief Richard van Meenen regarding deflections off a player’s own body. According to that guidance, contact following a touch off the player’s own frame does not constitute a handball offence.
History with the Match Official
The Telstar goalkeeper linked the incident to a previous encounter with the same official. “It’s Jeroen Manschot again. Last year, in the KNVB Cup semi-final, he screwed us over too,” Koeman Jr. told ESPN, before immediately qualifying his statement by adding, “Or ‘screwed us over’… We’re a bit unlucky, of course.”
“He said to me: ‘Ultimately, I make my own decision.’ So I think he’s been told off, that referees need to make more of their own decisions,” the goalkeeper suggested. Despite conceding four goals to the league leaders, Koeman Jr. expressed pride in his side’s high-pressing tactical approach and resilience in fighting back multiple times throughout the fixture.
