Angélique Kidjo Makes History As First Black African With Hollywood Walk of Fame Star

August 19, 2026 Julia Evans – Entertainment Editor Entertainment

On August 18, 2026, Beninese-French singer Angélique Kidjo made history in Los Angeles by becoming the first Black African to receive a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. The milestone celebration for the 66-year-old artist brought together film and music icons on the busy California thoroughfare, highlighting a career spanning more than 40 years and 18 studio albums, including her April 2026 release HOPE!!.

A Historic Milestone for African Music on the Walk of Fame

The dedication ceremony under palm trees in Los Angeles drew industry titans and performers to celebrate the five-time Grammy winner, actress, and activist. Reflecting on the global impact of her heritage during the event, Kidjo stated, “We Africans don’t know what we’ve given to the world. Following remarks from her peers and supporters, the Beninese icon erupted into song as attendees watched.”

The cultural weight of the honor resonated far beyond the California boulevard. Benin’s President Romuald Wadagni celebrated the moment on social media, writing that the iconic singer had etched her name into history and elevated the creativity, rhythms, and dignity of the nation to the highest level, as reported by Yahoo.

Industry Leaders and Peers Praise a 40-Year Legacy

Speakers at the Tuesday ceremony emphasized Kidjo’s extensive contributions to both the global music community and humanitarian efforts. Harvey Mason Jr. of the Recording Academy hailed Kidjo as a “rare artist,” noting that her example has elevated the global music community and proven that music serves as connection rather than mere entertainment. Mason added that the permanent star symbolizes her achievements, but her true legacy lives on through the barriers she has broken and the people she has inspired.

Actor Willem Dafoe also praised Kidjo’s stage presence, calling her the hardest-working woman in show business after witnessing her energy, dancing, and commitment live. Beyond her artistic output, Dafoe highlighted Kidjo’s dedication to the Batonga Foundation, an organization she established to empower and educate young women in Africa. Kidjo invented the word “Batonga” as a child in response to being told that girls did not belong in the classroom. Dafoe noted that this philanthropy is a natural extension of her music, designed to stir audiences and remind them of human connection.

Global Advocacy and Humanitarian Impact

Kidjo’s platform extends well beyond her discography and stage performances. She has served as a UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador since 2002 and maintains a consistent presence at high-level international convenings, including the Davos Forum. Her advocacy work includes speaking at the United Nations General Assembly, serving as the spokesperson for the Affirmative Finance Action for Women in Africa (AFAWA) initiative at the 2019 G7 Summit, and performing at the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games Opening Ceremony.

These international engagements have earned her widespread recognition outside the recording industry. Time magazine named Kidjo one of the 100 most influential people in 2021, while the BBC nominated her as one of Africa’s 50 most iconic figures, and The Guardian listed her among the 100 most inspiring people in the world.
