Andrew Lincoln: TWD Fortune, Family & Why He Stepped Back From Acting

Andrew Lincoln, the British actor who rose to international prominence portraying Rick Grimes in AMC’s The Walking Dead, stepped away from the role in 2018, citing a desire to spend more time with his family. The decision brought an end to a nearly decade-long run as the central figure in the hugely popular post-apocalyptic drama.

Lincoln, born Andrew James Clutterbuck in London, began his acting career in British television, appearing in series like This Life and Teachers, and the film Love Actually. Though, it was his casting as Rick Grimes in 2010 that catapulted him to global recognition. He portrayed the sheriff’s deputy turned leader of a group of survivors navigating a world overrun by zombies, a role that demanded a grueling production schedule and extended periods away from his home, and family.

According to reports at the time of his departure, Lincoln’s family resided in the United Kingdom while he primarily worked on The Walking Dead in the United States. The demanding nature of the show’s production, requiring significant time commitments and travel, made it increasingly tricky to maintain a consistent presence in his children’s lives. Lincoln is married to Gael Anderson, whose father is musician Ian Anderson of Jethro Tull.

The actor’s decision to leave was reportedly motivated by a desire to be closer to his two young children as they grew up. He had spent his early childhood in Hull, Yorkshire, before his family relocated to Bath, Somerset, where he attended Beechen Cliff School and later the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art (RADA). Returning to the UK allowed him to reconnect with his roots and prioritize family life.

While his exit from The Walking Dead was initially framed as a storyline-driven departure, leaving the door open for a potential return, Lincoln subsequently reprised the role in the 2024 spin-off miniseries, The Walking Dead: The Ones Who Live. This return followed years of speculation and fan anticipation, demonstrating the enduring appeal of the character and the actor’s connection to the franchise.

Lincoln’s career has continued beyond his association with The Walking Dead, with recent credits including roles in Guillermo del Toro’s Cabinet of Curiosities and a podcast series, A Better Paradise. His early training at RADA provided a strong foundation for a diverse range of roles, and his decision to prioritize family did not signal an end to his acting career, but rather a recalibration of his priorities.
