AI “Super Babysitter” System Monitors Endangered Yangtze Finless Porpoises
An advanced artificial intelligence system known as a super AI babysitter is actively tracking the endangered Yangtze finless porpoise in Wuhan, Hubei province, according to the Institute of Hydrobiology of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS). Deployed to safeguard the species, the algorithm-driven platform uses video feeds to analyze daily activities, monitor mother-baby interactions, and build standardized growth profiles that dictate individual care needs.
The Technology Behind the Super AI Babysitter
The monitoring platform relies on robust computing capacity to dissect underwater video footage with high precision. According to Hao Yujiang, director of the Yangtze Cetacean Breeding and Conservation Center at the CAS Institute of Hydrobiology, the system automatically recognizes specific behaviors. These include maternal breastfeeding patterns, the positioning of calves clinging to their mothers for rides, group swimming formations, and surfacing habits for air.
Wang Kexiong, a researcher at the institute, noted that the bond between mother porpoises and their calves remains critical to overall survival rates. Caretakers evaluate the health of this relationship by tracking the exact duration and frequency of breastfeeding captured by the cameras. The new digital framework has achieved a monitoring accuracy of nearly 90 percent, streamlining protection efforts for newborns.
Overcoming Traditional River Monitoring Barriers
Finless porpoises typically remain hidden underwater for much of the day. Traditional survey methods, such as ship-based visual observation and passive acoustic monitoring, face severe restrictions caused by changing weather, heavy shipping traffic, and limited surface water visibility. Continuous, large-scale tracking has historically challenged conservationists trying to map accurate activity patterns and breeding conditions.

Population Rebound and Environmental Indicators
Recognized widely as an icon of the Yangtze River ecosystem, the species earns the moniker “the Smile of the Yangtze” due to its naturally upturned mouth. Because of its scarce numbers, it is also frequently called the “Giant Panda of the Water.” The population size acts as a direct bellwether for the overall health of the Yangtze River’s aquatic environment.
Data released by the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs shows that the total population of Yangtze finless porpoises reached 1,426 in 2025, marking an increase of 177 individuals since 2022.
