Grand Theft Auto Creator Warns AI’s “algorithmic Arrogance” Will Prevent it From Replacing Humans
LOS ANGELES, CA – Dan Houser, the creative force behind the blockbuster Grand Theft Auto and Red Dead Redemption franchises, has voiced strong skepticism about the potential for artificial intelligence to supplant human creativity, citing essential flaws in current chatbot technology. Houser believes AI’s inconsistency and overconfidence in incorrect responses pose insurmountable obstacles to its widespread adoption as a replacement for human intelligence.
The concerns from Houser, who recently launched a new venture called Absurd Ventures, come at a pivotal moment as AI rapidly permeates numerous industries, sparking debate about its impact on the future of work. His perspective carries meaningful weight given his decades of experience crafting complex narratives and immersive worlds in the video game industry – a field increasingly exploring AI integration. The stakes are high, as the entertainment industry and beyond grapple with the potential disruption and opportunities presented by rapidly evolving AI technologies.
Houser expressed being “a little obsessed” with the unreliability of AI chatbots, noting their tendency to deliver differing answers to the same query and to present inaccurate facts with unwavering certainty. “I’m a little obsessed with the fact that when you search for the same thing [une deuxième fois] it doesn’t give you the same answers. And she is often wrong, but she says it with such confidence,” Houser stated. He believes this “inconsistency of their answers coupled with algorithmic arrogance” will ultimately prevent AI from truly replacing human capabilities.
Despite his reservations about AI, Houser is actively pursuing new creative endeavors with Absurd Ventures. The studio is currently developing a series of narrative podcasts, A better Paradise, and a graphic novel, American Caper. Two unannounced video game titles are also in development.
Meanwhile, anticipation builds for the release of Grand Theft Auto 6 from Houser’s former studio, Rockstar Games, currently slated for November 19, 2026. The game remains one of the most eagerly awaited entertainment products globally.
