Google CEO Warns of Potential AI Bubble Burst, Massive Energy Demands
MOUNTAIN VIEW, CA – November 18, 2025 – Google CEO Sundar Pichai has cautioned that even his company wouldn’t be immune to a potential collapse of the rapidly inflating artificial intelligence (AI) bubble. Speaking to investors,Pichai acknowledged the significant investment fueling the sector, stating,”No company (would) be spared, including us,” should the bubble burst.
The warning comes as valuations of specialized AI technology firms have surged in recent months, prompting concerns about market sustainability. While confident Google could weather the storm, Pichai’s statement underscores the widespread risk within the industry.
Beyond financial instability, Pichai highlighted the substantial energy consumption required to power AI progress. He revealed that AI already accounted for 1.5% of global electricity consumption in 2024, according to the International Energy Agency, advocating for investment in new energy sources and infrastructure improvements. Google’s own climate goals, aiming for carbon neutrality by 2030, are facing delays due to these intensive energy needs. “The pace at which we hoped to progress will be affected,” Pichai admitted.
Addressing concerns about job displacement, Pichai emphasized the need for workforce adaptation. “We will have to manage societal disruptions,” he said, but added that AI’s development “will also create new opportunities.” He insisted that while professions like teaching and medicine will remain relevant, success within those fields will increasingly depend on proficiency with AI tools. “It doesn’t matter whether you want to be a teacher or a doctor… those who succeed in each of them will be those who learn to use these tools.”
