Ahmedabad PG Security Guard Arrested for Alleged Rape of Student
An interior design student staying at a paying guest accommodation in Ahmedabad’s Anandnagar area was allegedly raped and strangled with a wire on the building’s terrace on Saturday, August 8, according to police reports. Ahmedabad Police arrested the suspect, identified as Dharm Singh, following an overnight manhunt involving more than 10 specialized teams.
The victim, a 20-year-old student pursuing her education at Gujarat University, had walked up to the terrace of her accommodation for a walk at approximately 9:00 PM to 10:00 PM. According to the police complaint, the suspect approached her from behind just six to seven days after starting his employment at the facility.
An Overnight Manhunt and Arrest in Ahmedabad
Following the attack, the victim managed to reach safety and alert residents, who immediately contacted local authorities. According to reports from The Free Press Journal and Gujarat Samachar, the Anandnagar Police, the Local Crime Branch, and the Ahmedabad Crime Branch mobilized rapidly. Investigators formed over 10 teams to track down the assailant.

Authorities utilized technical surveillance and human intelligence networks throughout the night. Officers apprehended Dharm Singh, a native of Hardoi district in Uttar Pradesh, early Sunday morning. Investigators noted that the suspect had been hired as a security guard at the paying guest accommodation barely a week before the incident occurred.
Scrutiny Over Background Checks and Security Protocol
The attack has ignited intense local concern regarding the safety mechanisms and regulatory compliance of paying guest facilities across urban centers. Local investigators are actively scrutinizing the management of the PG accommodation to determine whether proper background checks and mandatory police verifications were executed before employing Singh.

Forensic units are currently reviewing CCTV footage from the premises, which reportedly shows the suspect moving between the building floors and the terrace via the lift. Investigators are also analyzing the wire utilized during the assault as part of the physical evidence to build a comprehensive prosecution case.
The victim was transported to a local hospital following the attack and remains under medical care. Meanwhile, municipal authorities and law enforcement continue to examine the broader implications of private security deployment standards in student housing networks, emphasizing the urgent need for stringent oversight by local municipal and regulatory authorities to protect residents.
