Afghanistan-Pakistan Tensions flare Amidst Failed Peace Efforts
Kabul/Islamabad – Cross-border violence has escalated between Afghanistan and Pakistan, with Afghanistan accusing Pakistan of conducting air strikes on November 25, 2025, resulting in civilian casualties including nine children and a woman. The alleged strikes occurred a day after a bombing in Pakistan claimed the lives of three security personnel. these incidents underscore the fragility of recent peace initiatives and a temporary ceasefire between the two nations.
The renewed hostilities raise serious concerns about regional stability and the potential for a wider conflict. Decades of mistrust, accusations of harboring militant groups, and disputes over the porous border have fueled tensions.The current escalation threatens to derail diplomatic efforts and could further destabilize both countries, impacting millions and possibly drawing in other regional actors.
According to reports, the Taliban government in Afghanistan has condemned the Pakistani air strikes as a violation of its sovereignty. Pakistan has not officially confirmed the strikes but has previously stated its right to respond to attacks originating from Afghan soil. This cycle of accusation and retaliation highlights the deep-seated security dilemmas facing both nations.

Obaidallah outer, an adjunct lecturer at the American University of Afghanistan, notes the importance of dialog. “Without a sustained and meaningful dialogue, these cycles of violence will continue. Both sides need to address the root causes of the conflict and build trust.”
Hameed Hakimi, an associate fellow at Chatham House, emphasizes the need for international mediation. “The international community has a role to play in de-escalating tensions and facilitating a peaceful resolution. Ignoring this situation could have serious repercussions for regional and global security.”
