AfD Youth Group Reborn: Controversy and Protests Erupt

AfD Re-launches Youth Wing “Generation Germany” in Giessen ⁢Amidst Massive Counter-Protests

Giessen, Germany – The Choice for Germany (AfD) today ‍re-established its youth organization, “Generation Deutschland,” at an event in Giessen, drawing an estimated 25,000 to 30,000 counter-demonstrators to the⁢ city center.‌ The re-founding, despite the notable opposition, signals the party’s continued commitment to its radical course, according to experts. ⁣The event was ⁢marked by clashes between protesters and police, resulting in minor injuries to several ⁤officers.

The⁣ re-emergence of a dedicated‍ AfD youth wing is significant as it indicates the‌ party’s ‌intent ‍to actively cultivate and mobilize a new generation of supporters. Following the previous youth organization, Junge alternative (JA), ⁣being dissolved, concerns are rising that “Generation‌ Deutschland”⁢ will not represent a shift towards moderation. political scientist Wolfgang Schroeder, speaking ‌on Deutschlandfunk, noted ‌the new organization comprises largely the same individuals who previously held leadership positions within the JA. ⁣This‍ re-foundation occurs against a⁤ backdrop of increasing scrutiny of the AfD’s extremist tendencies and its⁤ growing influence in German politics.

AfD leader Alice Weidel sharply criticized the protests, labeling them “deeply undemocratic” and expressing concern over ⁣a perceived⁣ “willingness to use violence.” ‍In ⁣her opening remarks, Weidel⁣ called for demonstrators to “disarm” and urged respect for law enforcement, claiming AfD member of parliament, René Schmidt, had been assaulted. Federal Interior Minister Andreas Dobrindt echoed Weidel’s condemnation of violence ‍among some protesters.

Police reported that while the⁢ majority of counter-demonstrations were peaceful,⁣ disruptions and violent confrontations occurred on the periphery of‌ the rallies. The event took place on November 29th, 2025, and was reported ‍on‍ the Deutschlandfunk program.
