The Holy Island: A Glimpse into Survival
With the release of ’28 Years Later’ slated for June 19, details about the film’s plot are emerging. The film explores how humanity has adapted to survive nearly three decades after the Rage virus devastated the nation.
One community, known as The Holy island, has chosen complete isolation as their means of survival. Aaron Taylor-Johnson, who plays Jamie, a scavenger, shared insights into this new addition to the ’28 Days Later’ universe.
My character is part of this community that survived 20-odd years because they live on the Holy Island, disconnected from the mainland. They don’t have doctors or medicine, can only eat what they can grow, they can go hunt, but they have to go hunt on the mainland.
Aaron Taylor-Johnson
Taylor-Johnson further explained the strict rules governing this community:
And we have rules, if you leave the island and you don’t return, there’s no one going out to look for you, they’re going to assume you’ve been infected and you’re dead.
Aaron Taylor-Johnson
In the film, Jamie is tasked with training his son, Spike, in survival skills before embarking on a hazardous mission to the mainland. This training is portrayed as a rite of passage, essential for their survival should they ever leave the island.
Cast and Characters
- Aaron Taylor-Johnson as Jamie,a scavenger
- Jodie Comer as Isla, jamie’s wife
- Ralph Fiennes as Dr. Kelson, a survivor of the outbreak
Cillian Murphy’s Potential Return
The original film, ’28 Days Later,’ starred Cillian Murphy as Jim, a bicycle courier who awakens from a coma to a world overrun by a highly contagious virus. Despite speculation about his return in the sequel, the initial trailer did not feature Murphy, leading to fan theories that were later debunked.
Though, director Danny Boyle has hinted that Murphy may appear in later films in the trilogy.
Like all good things in life, you may have to wait a little while for [Cillian] to make his appearance.
Danny Boyle
Producer Andrew Macdonald confirmed that while Murphy is not in ’28 Years Later,’ he is involved as an executive producer and coudl return in future installments.
[On] this, we wanted him to be involved and he wanted to be involved. He is not in the frist film, but I’m hoping there will be some Jim somewhere along the line. He’s involved at the moment as an executive producer, and I would hope we can work with him in some way in the future in the trilogy.
