Canadian Soldier Dies While Deployed with NATO in Latvia
Riga, Latvia – September 7, 2025 - A Canadian armed Forces soldier stationed in Latvia as part of operation Reassurance has died, the Department of National Defence confirmed today. Details surrounding the death remain limited, but authorities have stated it was not the result of combat activity.
the soldier’s identity is being withheld pending notification of next of kin. This incident underscores the risks inherent in international deployments, even those focused on reassurance and deterrence. Operation Reassurance, a key component of NATO’s strengthened presence on its eastern flank, aims to bolster regional security in response to Russia’s actions. The death will likely prompt a review of safety protocols and raise questions about the challenges faced by troops operating in a heightened geopolitical environment. An examination is underway to determine the precise circumstances of the death.
Operation Reassurance was launched in 2014 following Russia’s annexation of Crimea and has been substantially expanded as the full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022. Canada leads a multinational NATO battle group in Latvia, comprised of approximately 1,000 soldiers from Canada, as well as allied nations. Canadian troops routinely conduct joint training exercises and patrols with Latvian and other allied forces, contributing to the stability and security of the Baltic region.
“The safety and well-being of our personnel is our top priority,” a DND spokesperson stated. “We are deeply saddened by this loss and offer our sincere condolences to the soldier’s family and friends.” Further updates will be provided as they become available.
The Reassurance operation is one of the key elements of Canada’s involvement in NATO’s activities on the eastern flank of the alliance. Soldiers participating in this mission regularly cooperate with partners from other Member States, ensuring the safety and stability of the region.
