A recent social media discussion sparked renewed interest in the opening lyrics of Disney’s “The Lion King” song, “Circle of Life,” revealing that the powerful Zulu vocals many believe to be deeply symbolic are, according to one South African native, relatively straightforward in their meaning.
The song, which opens the 1994 animated film, begins with the phrase “Nants ingonyama, bagithi Baba!” performed by Lebo M. In a single take, and has captivated audiences for decades. While many have speculated about the profound meaning behind the lyrics, Learnmore Jonasi, from Chimanimani, Zimbabwe, suggested in a February 26, 2026, appearance on the One54 Africa podcast, hosted by Godfrey and Akbar, that the translation is quite literal.
According to multiple sources, the lyrics directly reference a lion. The song’s composition is credited to Elton John and Hans Zimmer, with lyrics by Tim Rice. Rice, in an interview, noted the speed with which John composed the song, completing a demo in just over an hour after receiving the lyrics.
“Circle of Life” features vocals by Carmen Twillie, providing the deep female lead, alongside Lebo M.’s opening in Zulu. The song was released as a single in August 1994, with B-sides including “I Just Can’t Wait to Be King” and “This Land.” A music video accompanied the single release, featuring John performing with the London Community Gospel Choir.
The film itself, which follows the story of Simba, a lion cub destined to be king, remains available on Disney+. It grossed close to $1 billion at the box office, and the soundtrack, including “Circle of Life,” charted globally.
