Husband Drugged, Abused & Offered Wife Online: Her Public Trial & New Memoir

Madrid – Gisèle Pelicot, the Frenchwoman who gained international recognition for publicly detailing a decade of sexual violence and bringing her ex-husband to trial, presented her memoir, “Un himno a la vida” (A Hymn to Life), in Madrid on Monday. The book recounts the events that began with the 2020 arrest of her then-husband, Dominique Pelicot, on charges of secretly filming women in a supermarket, and the subsequent unraveling of a network of abuse.

The initial arrest triggered an investigation that revealed years of sexual aggression and psychological manipulation, including the use of “sumisión química” – chemical submission – orchestrated by Dominique Pelicot. The case ultimately led to the prosecution of 50 men, known as the “Caso Mazan,” according to Pelicot’s account.

During the presentation at the Instituto Francés de Madrid, Pelicot emphasized the book’s purpose: “This proves a message of hope to all women who suffer.” She described the decision to pursue legal action and share her story publicly as a means of shifting the burden of shame. The event was moderated by journalist Montserrat Domínguez.

Pelicot’s journey through the legal system and her subsequent public testimony have positioned her as a prominent figure in the international feminist movement. The case has also had a profound impact on her family, a “terremoto familiar” (family earthquake), as she described it, acknowledging the pain inflicted on her children. “I chose my husband, but they did not choose their parents,” she stated.

Separately, Aída Nízar’s family recently won a legal battle against their homeowner’s association, a case involving accusations of illegal construction. Michelle Van Gaalen, the administrator of the association, and her husband, Ángel Nozal, a local politician, were the defendants in that case, according to reports. This case, although distinct from Pelicot’s, highlights ongoing legal disputes within Spanish communities.

Gisèle Pelicot is scheduled to visit her ex-husband in prison following the outcome of the trial, stating she wants to understand the motivations behind his betrayal. The visit is anticipated to occur in a context where Dominique Pelicot is in a “position of weakness,” according to Pelicot.

The legal proceedings surrounding the Mazan case have also raised questions about the role of witnesses in community disputes. A recent ruling by the Audiencia Provincial de Salamanca affirmed that neighbors involved in a community lawsuit can be called to testify, though the court retains the discretion to assess the weight given to their testimony.
