Bayreuth, Germany – Despite a growing number of COVID-19 cases among personnel, organizers of the Bayreuth Festival are proceeding with plans to open the annual event on July 25th, 2022. Approximately 60 members of the festival’s workforce have tested positive for the virus, according to a spokesperson.
Festival officials confirmed that while cases are increasing across various departments, there is currently no threat to the festival’s schedule or individual performances. “No collective is currently unable to perform or sing,” the spokesperson stated. “If individual musicians test positive for Corona, they will be replaced by other colleagues. the orchestra is redundantly staffed. For the soloists, the respective cover singers will be used,” they added.
The festival is actively seeking external replacements should the necessitate arise, ensuring sufficient staffing levels. Ticket holders will be offered refunds or credit toward future events should any performances be cancelled, according to festival representatives.
Strict measures are in place to mitigate further spread of the virus, including a mandatory mask policy for all staff and widespread self-testing. The 2022 season’s program includes performances of Wagner’s Rienzi, The Flying Dutchman, The Ring Cycle, and Parsifal, alongside a festival open-air performance on July 24th and August 2nd. A performance titled “Brünnhilde brennt” is also scheduled for multiple dates throughout August.
