Netflix Safety: Could It Have Prevented This Tragedy?

Australian Formula 1 driver Jack Doohan received serious death threats during his 2025 rookie season with Alpine, including messages threatening violence against him and his family, as revealed in the upcoming eighth season of Netflix’s Drive to Survive. The threats escalated following the Miami Grand Prix, where speculation about his potential replacement by Franco Colapinto was rampant.

Doohan detailed the chilling threats in the docuseries, stating he received six or seven emails warning of brutal violence if he continued racing in Miami. According to Doohan, one message explicitly stated, “All my limbs will be cut off.” The threats prompted a significant security response, including the involvement of law enforcement.

The situation escalated to a point where Doohan required a police escort while out with his girlfriend and trainer. He recounted an incident where he found himself surrounded by armed men, necessitating intervention from his security detail. “I had to call my police escort to come and secure it under control,” Doohan said.

Following the Miami Grand Prix, Doohan transitioned from a main driver position to Alpine’s reserve driver. He has since secured a reserve driver contract with the Haas F1 Team for the 2026 season, describing the team as “the ideal place to continue my Formula 1 career.”

The threats against Doohan are not isolated. KATSEYE, a global girl group formed through the 2024 Netflix reveal Pop Star Academy, has also reported receiving thousands of death threats and experiencing online hate. Miranda Derrick, along with her husband James “BDash” Derrick, have similarly reported receiving threats following the release of a Netflix docuseries, raising concerns about the safety of public figures in the wake of increased media exposure.
