Madrid Healthcare: 938K Dental & Primary Care Consultations in 2023

Madrid’s public healthcare system provided nearly 3,800 daily dental health consultations in 2025, according to data released this week by the Comunidad de Madrid. A total of 938,345 appointments were completed throughout the year, focusing on preventative care, early diagnosis and ongoing management of dental pathologies across all age groups.

The consultations are delivered through 86 Unidad de Salud Bucodental (USBD) units integrated within the region’s primary care network. These units are staffed by dentists, dental hygienists, and auxiliary personnel, with each resident assigned a primary dental healthcare provider. Appointments can be scheduled directly through local health centers or via the Tarjeta Sanitaria Virtual, the region’s digital health card.

The Comunidad de Madrid has allocated 8 million euros to expand dental care access for specific populations. This funding, initiated in mid-2025, supports complex dental treatments for individuals under 16, as well as providing complete dentures, caries treatment, and teeth cleaning for residents over the age of 80. As of January 2026, approximately 9,000 people have benefited from these subsidized services, delivered through agreements between the regional health authority and the Colegio de Odontólogos y Estomatólogos de la Primera Región, the region’s dental association.

Residents seeking these services are initially required to visit their assigned primary care dentist for evaluation and referral to participating clinics when necessary. The regional health service also offers specialized dental care for pregnant women, including dental check-ups, dietary advice, fluoride applications, and cleaning treatments as needed.

Children aged two to four are referred from primary care to the USBD units for initial dental assessments and caries risk evaluation. Preventative treatments, such as fluoride application and fissure sealants, are also available. For children between six and 16, the system provides periodic check-ups, with additional preventative measures like fluoride treatments, sealant applications, cleaning, and fillings for permanent teeth offered as required.

The USBD units were the focus of a public awareness campaign, ‘Cerca de ti: Atención Primaria’ (Close to You: Primary Care), throughout February 2026. Information about the services offered is being disseminated through posters and a video available on the Madrid Salud YouTube channel, and displayed in health centers across the region.
