Two people are dead and two others injured following a shooting Saturday night at a repast held near American Legion Post 375 on Detroit’s east side, according to Detroit Police.
Officers responded to reports of shots fired in the 19400 block of Sherwood Street around 8:30 p.m., initially believing three individuals had been struck. A fourth victim later arrived at a local hospital, bringing the total number of those injured to four. Police confirmed a woman in her 20s and a man in his 30s were among those killed.
“We were informed that the individuals who were attending this event, who are all victims, uh, were attending a repass at this location,” said Detroit Police Homicide Captain Marcus Thirkill. “There appeared to be approximately 100 people attending this repass and we are aware that other individuals may have information that may help us to come to a resolution on this case.”
The shooting occurred in the parking lot of the facility while many attendees were outside, investigators said. The Detroit Police Homicide Task Force, which includes members of the Detroit Police Department Homicide Division, the Michigan State Police, the FBI, and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, is leading the investigation.
Authorities stated that the victims and the shooter were known to one another. Investigators are currently identifying witnesses, reviewing surveillance and cellphone video, and processing evidence collected from the scene. As of late Saturday, no arrests had been made and no suspect description had been released.
American Legion Post 375, also known as Joe Louis Post 375, is located at 19486 Sherwood Street in Detroit, according to the Chamber of Commerce.
