PETALING JAYA – Malaysian police have launched an investigation into allegations of a conspiracy to undermine the government, confirming reports of a potential plot to destabilize national security. Inspector-General of Police Mohd Khalid Ismail stated on February 27th that the investigation centers on claims of collaboration between a local “influential individual” and an international media agency.

The probe follows a police report lodged on February 26th at the Brickfields police station, detailing allegations that a prominent family is orchestrating efforts to overthrow the current administration. According to reports, an editor filed the complaint after a meeting with a member of the family regarding a potential biography and documentary project. During a subsequent Zoom meeting, the editor alleges, the discussion shifted towards strategies for attacking the government, prompting him to withdraw from the collaboration.

The investigation is being led by the Classified Criminal Investigation Unit (D5) within the Bukit Aman federal police’s Criminal Investigation Department’s Prosecution and Law Division. Authorities are operating under Section 124B of the Penal Code, which carries a potential sentence of up to 20 years imprisonment for individuals found guilty of engaging in activities detrimental to parliamentary democracy.

The alleged plot reportedly involves the engagement of a United Kingdom-based media consultancy firm tasked with initiating a smear campaign against Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim and his government. The family in question is currently facing separate legal action, adding another layer to the unfolding situation.

Inspector-General Ismail urged the public to refrain from speculation while the investigation is underway, emphasizing adherence to the principles of criminal justice. “Investigations are ongoing, and the public is advised not to speculate on the case while police complete their probe,” he said in a statement.

The Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM) is also examining potential links between the alleged conspiracy and an international media agency, as indicated by the initial police report. The scope of the agency’s involvement remains unclear as the investigation progresses.
