Google’s earthquake alert system, initially launched in 2020, is expanding its reach to Wear OS smartwatches, allowing users to receive warnings even without a connected smartphone. The update, delivered through the latest Google Play Services build (v26.07), marks a significant step in the evolution of the system, which leverages Android’s vast network of devices to detect seismic activity.
Previously, Wear OS earthquake alerts, available since June 2025, were dependent on a paired smartphone to function. The new functionality enables standalone operation, extending the system’s accessibility to a wider range of users. Google confirmed the change via a brief changelog, stating that users can now receive alerts directly on their Wear devices, regardless of smartphone connectivity.
The Android Earthquake Alerts System utilizes the accelerometers present in Android smartphones – and now, Wear OS devices – to detect the initial P-waves of an earthquake. When a phone or watch senses shaking, it transmits anonymized data, including its approximate location, to Google’s earthquake detection servers. By analyzing data from numerous devices, the system can confirm seismic events and issue alerts.
Google currently provides two types of alerts: “Be Aware” alerts for lighter shaking (magnitude 4.5 or greater) and “Take Action” alerts for stronger shaking (magnitude 4.5 or greater with moderate or higher intensity). “Take Action” alerts are designed to bypass “Do Not Disturb” mode and deliver a prominent audible warning, prompting users to take immediate protective measures. The system is currently available in over 98 countries.
In the United States, Google partners with the ShakeAlert® team in California, Washington, and Oregon, utilizing their network of 1,675 seismic sensors to provide alerts. Outside of these states, the system relies on its crowdsourced approach, leveraging the sensors in over two billion Android devices worldwide as a vast, distributed seismic network. The technology has been expanded to cover all 50 US states as of late 2024.
While Google has not yet released detailed instructions on how to configure the new Wear OS functionality, the update is rolling out as part of the latest Google Play Services build. Users are encouraged to monitor their Wear OS devices for new settings or options related to earthquake alerts. Google has not yet indicated when full support documentation will be available.
