Sony PSP Modded: Play Any Game – Tense Mods Review

by Rachel Kim – Technology Editor

A time traveler received a modified Sony PlayStation Portable (PSP) capable of playing any game ever created, according to a post shared on Instagram today by user @tenseimodz. The PSP was sourced from gaming modification company Tense Mods.

The modification allows the handheld console to bypass standard game compatibility restrictions. This capability extends to titles originally released for other platforms, including the Super Famicom, Sega Saturn, and PlayStation, as well as earlier iterations of the PSP itself, according to a discussion on the JRPG subreddit.

The PSP 1000, and later models like the 2000 and 3000, have become popular targets for hardware upgrades and modifications. A recent TikTok video highlighted IPS screen upgrades for the PSP 1000, improving display quality. The PSP’s enduring appeal is also reflected in a growing market for specialized modifications and retro gaming accessories.

Modding gaming consoles, including the PlayStation 1, PSP, and PlayStation Vita, has been a long-standing practice among enthusiasts. A forum post from June 2024 on AtariAge indicated that some users have actively modified their consoles, while others have chosen not to.
