Canada’s Bennett & Hughes Penalties Lead to Overtime in Hockey Game

by Alex Carter - Sports Editor

With just six and a half minutes remaining in regulation time, Canadian forward Sam Bennett received a two-minute minor penalty for high-sticking, followed by a two-minute penalty to Jack Hughes of the United States shortly thereafter. Neither team capitalized on their respective power plays, sending the Olympic hockey superfinal between Canada and the United States to a scoreless tie and overtime.

The penalty to Bennett came during a tense stretch of play, as both teams battled for control in the closing minutes of the third period. Hughes’ subsequent penalty, though failing to result in a goal, underscored the increasingly physical nature of the contest. The game remained tied at 1-1 after three periods, setting the stage for a sudden-death overtime period to determine the Olympic champion.

This final matchup followed a dominant run through the group stage for both nations. Canada defeated Czechia 5-0, Switzerland 5-1, and France 10-2, while the United States overcame Latvia 5-1, Denmark 6-3, and Germany 5-1. Both teams then navigated challenging quarterfinal matchups, with Canada edging Czechia 4-3 in a game decided in overtime and the United States securing a 2-1 overtime victory against Sweden.

The United States advanced to the final after a decisive 6-2 victory over Slovakia in the semi-final round. Canada reached the championship game by overcoming a 2-0 deficit to defeat Finland 3-2, scoring the winning goal in the final minute of regulation.

The championship game marks the third time Canada and the United States have faced each other in the Olympic men’s hockey final. Canada emerged victorious in both previous encounters, winning 5-2 in Salt Lake City in 2002 and 3-2 in Vancouver in 2010. In the 2002 final, Joe Sakic recorded two goals and two assists, while Sidney Crosby scored the overtime winner in 2010. Crosby’s participation in the 2026 final was initially uncertain due to injury, having been sidelined for the semi-final game.

Prior to the final, the U.S. Team received a message of support from President Donald Trump, who, according to reports, had previously threatened Canada with sanctions and even suggested the possibility of making the country the 51st state. A White House press secretary reportedly expressed hope that the U.S. Would defeat “our soon-to-be 51st state, Canada.”

Sam Bennett, who currently plays for the Florida Panthers alongside Canadians Uvis Balinskis and Sandis Vilmanis, was added to the Canadian Olympic roster as a replacement for injured Tampa Bay Lightning forward Anthony Cirelli. Bennett previously played for the Calgary Flames before being traded to the Panthers in 2021 in exchange for Emil Heineman and a second-round draft pick. He signed a four-year, $17.6 million contract with the Panthers in July 2021.

The 2026 Winter Olympics marks the first time Canada has won the Four Nations Tournament, defeating the United States 3-2 in overtime. Connor McDavid scored the game-winning goal in overtime, securing the championship for Canada.
