Angola & Guangzhou: New Direct Flights Under Consideration

by Lucas Fernandez – World Editor

TAAG Angola Airlines, the country’s state-owned carrier, is assessing the feasibility of establishing a direct air link between Luanda and Guangzhou, China, a move that could significantly boost trade and travel between the two nations.

Currently, travel between Luanda’s Quatro de Fevereiro Airport (LAD) and Guangzhou Baiyun International Airport (CAN) requires at least one connection, typically through Addis Ababa with Ethiopian Airlines, or via Istanbul with Turkish Airlines, according to available flight data. Qatar Airways also offers connecting flights.

The potential new route is being considered as demand for travel to Guangzhou increases. Guangzhou is a major manufacturing and trading hub, and a key destination for Angolan businesses and individuals. Trip.com currently lists flights from Luanda to Guangzhou starting at US$758, while Skyscanner indicates prices from $1,911. Kiwi.com offers flights starting at £516.

A direct flight would reduce travel time and potentially lower costs, making Guangzhou more accessible. Expedia currently lists one-way flights ranging from $1075 to $2719, and roundtrip flights from $1761.

TAAG has not yet announced a firm timeline for the launch of the service, nor has it specified which aircraft would be used on the route. However, the airline is reportedly evaluating passenger load factors and operational costs to determine the viability of the project. Ethiopian Airlines is currently the most popular airline for this route.

Guangzhou Baiyun International Airport is one of China’s busiest aviation hubs, offering a variety of transport options to the city center, including metro lines, airport express coaches, taxis, and ride-hailing services.
