Apple has released tvOS 26.4, introducing a new “Continuous Audio Connection” setting aimed at resolving audio synchronization issues experienced by some Apple TV 4K users, particularly those utilizing Sonos speakers in conjunction with audio/video receivers.
The new setting, as described by Apple, utilizes a Dolby MAT connection “for glitch-free playback across formats,” and is intended to maintain audio fidelity without modification to original mixes. Apple notes that older receivers may still register an Atmos connection even when the setting is enabled.
The update comes in response to user reports detailing problems such as popping sounds and inconsistent volume levels, specifically during 5.1-channel content playback. Users on the Sonos subreddit have reported that enabling the “Continuous Audio Connection” setting effectively resolves these issues. “I can confirm that this function fixed my issues with 5.1 multichannel PCM content being way quieter than Atmos contents,” one user posted. Another user stated, “My 5.1 content sounds just as great as Atmos now.”
Previously, workarounds for these audio problems involved disabling eARC (enhanced Audio Return Channel) and forcing the television to recode audio to Dolby Digital Plus, or forcing Dolby Digital within the Apple TV settings. According to user reports, these solutions are no longer necessary with the new setting enabled.
Still, the rollout isn’t without complications. Some Sonos users have reported encountering new issues with stereo content after enabling “Continuous Audio Connection.” These users have indicated problems with stereo playback following the update.
tvOS 26.4 is currently available to developers and public beta testers, suggesting Apple intends to further refine the setting based on feedback gathered during the beta testing phase. The update as well removes the iTunes Movies and TV Shows apps, a change previously announced by Apple.
Recent reporting has highlighted broader compatibility challenges between Apple TV 4K and AV receivers, even beyond the specific issues addressed by this update. Pocket-lint noted that despite the potential for a high-quality home theater experience, pairing an Apple TV 4K with a receiver doesn’t always deliver optimal results.
The availability of Dolby Atmos wireless audio sync on Apple TV, as reported by The Verge, is a separate but contemporaneous development, offering improved audio performance for compatible setups.
