Wembanyama’s Dunk Highlights NBA All-Star Game Debut

INGLEWOOD, Calif. — Victor Wembanyama emphatically announced his presence at the 2026 NBA All-Star Game with a powerful dunk just six seconds into the opening tip-off, signaling a commitment to competitive play that reverberated throughout a revamped showcase event at Crypto.com Arena on Sunday. Despite the early intensity and a pledge to inspire greater effort from his teammates, Wembanyama’s Team World ultimately fell short, losing both of its round-robin games to the two American-composed teams.

The new All-Star Game format, featuring three teams – two comprised of American players and one largely of international stars – aimed to address years of criticism regarding a perceived lack of effort and competitive spirit. The format proved successful in generating a more engaging contest, according to players and observers. CBS Sports reported that the new format created a “much more competitive game than in recent years.”

Wembanyama’s immediate impact was undeniable. Winning the opening tip against Anthony Edwards, the French center swiftly sealed position against Cade Cunningham and converted a quick pass from Jamal Murray into a resounding dunk. “You read that correctly. Wemby wins the tip and scores the first bucket of NBA All-Star 2026,” the NBA tweeted, highlighting the unexpected burst of energy at the game’s outset.

The intensity displayed by Wembanyama appeared to be contagious. “I ain’t gonna lie,” Timberwolves star Anthony Edwards said after the first game, “Wemby set the tone. He came out playing hard, so it’s hard not to match that, so s–t, that’s what happened.” Knicks star Karl-Anthony Towns echoed this sentiment, stating, “Fans been asking for it…I experience that after today, y’all can see that the competition is there. We all brought it today in the sense of effort.”

Whereas Team World ultimately lost to both USA Stripes and USA Stars, Wembanyama contributed 33 points across the two games. His commitment to playing with intensity, even in an exhibition game, was a clear departure from the often-lackadaisical approach seen in previous All-Star contests. “He said, ‘I’m coming out here to play hard,’” observed NBC color analyst Vince Carter. “The first three buckets, he set the tone. Off the rip, he wanted the ball, he wanted the ball in the post…He’s coming out to play.”

The USA Stripes, composed of veteran players, ultimately defeated the USA Stars, comprised of younger All-Stars, in the final game of the round-robin tournament. However, the broader narrative of the 2026 All-Star Game centered on the revitalized competitive spirit, largely attributed to Wembanyama’s early and sustained effort. The Associated Press reported that some players believe the new format “actually works,” and that Wembanyama “helped spark a more competitive” game.

Despite the loss and a near-miss buzzer-beater attempt against the USA Stripes, Wembanyama remained resolute. “C’était beaucoup plus plaisant que l’année dernière. Le basket proposé était pas mal,” Wembanyama said, noting the improved quality of play and increased intensity. The question remains whether this heightened level of competition will carry over to future All-Star Games, or if it was a singular effect of Wembanyama’s individual drive.
