Zoom Roleplay: Handling Murder & Player Death

by Rachel Kim – Technology Editor

Discussions surrounding the popular social deduction game Among Us and its modding community have raised questions about the handling of eliminated players within live game sessions. A recent post on the Reddit forum dedicated to the game The Traitors, a related social deduction indicate, suggested a potential feature for maintaining engagement even after a player’s character is “murdered” within the game.

The Reddit user proposed allowing eliminated players to remain in the voice chat as passive observers, rather than being completely removed from the session. This idea stemmed from a desire to preserve the social dynamic of the game, even when a player is no longer actively participating as a crewmate or impostor. The original post noted, “Too a part of me does not wish to fully kick the people who get murdered out of the zoom so maybe having them be a passive watcher afterwards?”

This concept aligns with ongoing development within the Among Us modding scene, specifically within “The Other Roles” mod. According to a GitHub repository for the mod, developers have recently addressed bugs related to role-specific deaths and the functionality of a “zoom out” feature. While the bug fixes don’t directly address the issue of continued observation, they demonstrate an active effort to refine the player experience and implement new features.

The “The Other Roles” mod, which adds numerous new roles and customization options to Among Us, has seen frequent updates. Recent versions, including v4.8.0 released on November 26, 2024, and v4.7.0, have focused on bug fixes and stability improvements. The mod’s extensive list of roles – including Impostor, Crewmate, Neutral, and various specialized roles like Godfather, Sheriff, and Hacker – suggests a community appetite for expanding the game’s complexity and social interaction.

The idea of allowing eliminated players to observe also resonates with strategies employed in other social deduction games. Mysterium, a cooperative board game where players attempt to deduce a murderer based on cryptic clues, encourages careful observation and interpretation of visual information. A recent TikTok video showcasing the game highlighted the importance of “paus[ing] and zoom[ing]” to analyze clue cards, emphasizing the value of attentive observation even outside of direct participation.

The potential implementation of a passive observer mode in Among Us or its mods remains under discussion. As of February 16, 2026, Innersloth LLC, the developers of Among Us, have not issued a statement regarding the feasibility or intention to incorporate such a feature into the base game. The developers of “The Other Roles” have not publicly commented on whether they plan to integrate a similar feature into their mod.
