TikTok Parent Launches Seedance 2.0: China’s AI Video Rival

Hollywood is bracing for a potential disruption as ByteDance, the parent company of TikTok, rolls out its new AI video generation tool, Seedance 2.0. The tool, currently available to users of ByteDance’s Jianying app in China, is slated for release to global users of its CapCut app, according to reports from the Wall Street Journal.

Seedance 2.0 allows users to create 15-second videos from text prompts, a capability that has drawn immediate criticism from the entertainment industry. A video circulated on X, purportedly created using a simple two-line prompt, depicted actors Tom Cruise and Brad Pitt in a fictional fight scene. Rhett Reese, screenwriter of “Deadpool,” responded to the post stating, “I hate to say it. It’s likely over for us.”

The Motion Picture Association (MPA) has issued a strong condemnation of the tool, with CEO Charles Rivkin demanding ByteDance “immediately cease its infringing activity.” Rivkin stated that Seedance 2.0 has engaged in “unauthorized utilize of U.S. Copyrighted works on a massive scale” and disregards established copyright law, potentially jeopardizing “millions of American jobs.” The Human Artistry Campaign, backed by Hollywood unions and trade groups, has similarly condemned the service.

The launch of Seedance 2.0 comes shortly after ByteDance finalized a deal to sell TikTok’s U.S. Operations, while retaining a stake in the new joint venture. The tool’s capabilities have garnered attention beyond the entertainment industry, with Elon Musk publicly acknowledging the technology. Reports indicate the tool is designed for professional film production, e-commerce, and advertising, aiming to reduce production costs and increase creative scalability.

In China, Seedance 2.0 has already generated significant buzz, with viral clips demonstrating its ability to create complex, film-quality videos. One example circulating on Weibo featured rappers Ye and Kim Kardashian depicted in a Mandarin-language imperial Chinese drama. Hashtags related to Seedance 2.0 have reportedly reached tens of millions of views on the platform. State media, including the Global Times, have drawn comparisons to the hype surrounding DeepSeek, another Chinese AI model, suggesting a new wave of recognition for China’s AI capabilities.

ByteDance claims the solution processes text, image, audio, and video, positioning it within the growing field of multimodal AI systems. The company has not yet responded to the MPA’s demands to halt the service, and has not commented on specific measures to prevent copyright infringement beyond its initial release.
