A lawyer in Rampur, Uttar Pradesh, was shot and killed inside the district panchayat office on February 11, 2026, by a clerk with whom he had been arguing. The incident, captured on CCTV footage, shows advocate Farrukh Ahmed Khan being shot by clerk Asgar Ali after a physical altercation, according to reports from Dainik Bhaskar and TV9 Hindi.

The CCTV footage, which surfaced on Thursday, February 13th, depicts Khan initially slapping Ali three times. A five-minute argument ensued before Khan began to leave, reportedly saying something to Ali that provoked a violent reaction. Ali then drew a licensed revolver and confronted Khan. The two men grappled, falling onto Ali’s chair during the struggle. Ali fired two shots, one of which struck Khan and another which appears to have wounded himself, according to the Bhaskar report.

The shooting occurred amidst a dispute involving the lawyer’s wife, Gausia, who is too a clerk at the district panchayat office. TV9 Hindi reported that the initial conflict stemmed from a disagreement between the couple. Gausia was also injured during the attack.

Following the incident, Asgar Ali was taken into police custody, as reported by TV9 Hindi. The murder has prompted strong reactions from the legal community in Rampur, with lawyers announcing an indefinite strike starting Friday, February 13th. They have also decided to stage a protest by surrounding the District Magistrate’s office and blocking the Delhi-Lucknow highway, according to Mohammad Usman, the General Secretary of the Bar Association.

The incident is under investigation, and authorities have not yet released a detailed statement regarding the motive or circumstances surrounding the shooting. As of February 14, 2026, the Bar Association’s planned protests are scheduled to proceed.
