Cassis at Munich Security Conference: OSCE & NATO Talks

by Lucas Fernandez – World Editor

Swiss Foreign Minister Ignazio Cassis met with high-ranking NATO officials at the Munich Security Conference, following a recent discussion with his Russian counterpart, Sergey Lavrov, regarding the war in Ukraine.

Cassis, who presided over the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE) during the conference, engaged in discussions with NATO representatives, though specific details of those meetings have not been publicly disclosed. The Swiss foreign minister’s attendance at the Munich conference occurred after a phone conversation with Lavrov, during which the situation in Ukraine was a central topic, according to a statement released by the Russian Foreign Ministry.

Russia’s state news agency reported that Lavrov and Cassis discussed the ongoing conflict, but provided no specifics regarding the content of the exchange. The OSCE Ministerial Council recently convened in Vienna to address principles, reforms, and the war in Ukraine, a meeting Cassis would have been central to as the organization’s presiding officer.

The Swiss government has maintained a position of neutrality regarding the conflict in Ukraine, but has also condemned Russia’s invasion. Cassis’s meetings at the Munich Security Conference and his conversation with Lavrov reflect Switzerland’s efforts to engage with all parties involved in the crisis, despite its neutral stance.

Following the conference, Cassis responded to questions from the press, but details of his responses have not been widely reported. The outcome of the discussions with NATO officials remains unclear, and no further meetings between Cassis and Lavrov have been publicly announced.
