Thomas Tuchel has committed his future to the England national team, signing a fresh contract that will see him remain as manager through to 2028, dashing Manchester United’s hopes of appointing the German coach.

Tuchel, who previously managed Chelsea and Bayern Munich, had emerged as a leading candidate to capture the helm at Old Trafford following a period of uncertainty surrounding the club’s managerial position. Reports in recent weeks suggested United were considering Tuchel as a potential permanent successor to Ruben Amorim, who was subsequently sacked.

However, those ambitions have been thwarted by Tuchel’s decision to extend his tenure with England, a move confirmed by multiple reports including The Times and Yahoo Sports. The extension comes despite initial expectations that Tuchel would depart his role after leading England at this summer’s World Cup.

“I am very happy and proud to extend my time with England,” Tuchel said in a statement. “It is no secret to anyone that I have loved every minute so far of working with my players and coaches and wait to lead them to the World Cup. It is an incredible opportunity and we are going to do our very best to make the country proud.”

He continued, “I have had so much support from Mark, all my colleagues at the FA and from fans wherever I go that I did not hesitate when asked to continue in this dream job. EURO 2028 will be a very special tournament and as a coach there is nothing more you want than to compete with the very best on the biggest possible stage.”

The news of Tuchel’s contract extension potentially strengthens the position of Manchester United’s interim manager, Michael Carrick. Carrick has enjoyed a successful start to his tenure, securing four wins and a draw, significantly improving the team’s chances of qualifying for the Champions League.

Despite Carrick’s positive impact, Sky Sports journalist Rob Dorsett reports that he remains “not the favourite” to be appointed as the long-term manager at Old Trafford. While Champions League qualification could elevate his status, the club is prioritizing a candidate with “the strength of character and experience to cope with all that is thrown at you as the main man at Old Trafford.”

According to Dorsett’s reporting, United are seeking a manager with a proven track record of success, suggesting they will target “the biggest names in world football” such as Carlo Ancelotti, who possess the “wow factor” and a history of winning major trophies. The club is keen to avoid repeating what they perceived as a misstep in pursuing Ruben Amorim, whom they deemed lacking the necessary experience for the demanding role.
