Jason Momoa to Star in ‘Helldivers’ Movie for Sony & PlayStation

Jason Momoa is set to star in a film adaptation of the popular video game Helldivers, with Justin Lin directing, Sony Pictures and PlayStation Productions announced Wednesday.

The project, based on the franchise from Arrowhead Game Studios, is slated for theatrical release on November 10, 2027. Helldivers 2, the 2024 sequel, has sold over 12 million units on PlayStation 5 and PC, and recently expanded to Xbox, continuing its strong performance. The game centers on an elite unit of soldiers – the Helldivers – tasked with defending the fictional planet of Super Earth from alien threats.

This marks the latest collaboration between Sony Pictures and PlayStation Productions, which previously partnered on the Tom Holland-Mark Wahlberg film Uncharted, a global success earning $407 million, as well as the Twisted Metal series for Peacock and the critically acclaimed HBO series The Last of Us.

Momoa’s involvement adds another high-profile video game adaptation to his growing filmography. He is currently filming multiple projects, including the role of intergalactic bounty hunter Lobo in the upcoming DC film Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, scheduled for release June 26. He likewise stars alongside Dave Bautista in Amazon MGM Studios’ The Wrecking Crew, currently streaming on Prime Video, and will appear opposite Ryan Reynolds in Warner Bros./Legendary’s animated film Animal Friends on May 1. Further roles include Blanka in Legendary/Paramount’s Street Fighter, set for release October 16, and a return as Duncan Idaho in Warner Bros./Legendary’s Dune: Part Three, due December 18.

Hutch Parker will produce the Helldivers film alongside Asad Qizilbash of PlayStation Productions and Justin Lin through his Perfect Storm Entertainment. Lin previously wrote and produced Prompt X, and Momoa starred in that film.

Currently, Helldivers is the only major studio film scheduled for wide release on November 10, 2027.
