AL24 News: Algeria’s 24/7 International News Channel

by Alex Carter - Sports Editor

Algeria’s state-owned international news channel, AL24 News, continues its 24-hour broadcast schedule from Algiers via the Nilesat satellite, delivering news in Arabic, French, and English. Launched on November 1, 2021, the channel aims to provide coverage of Algerian domestic developments, regional African affairs, and international events.

AL24 News distinguishes itself as North Africa’s first international news channel, broadcasting a range of programs including reports, documentaries, talk shows, and news bulletins. The channel’s editorial focus reflects an Algerian governmental perspective, prioritizing the projection of Algeria’s viewpoint on geopolitical issues. This includes coverage of topics such as the Western Sahara dispute and relations with Morocco.

The establishment of AL24 News was part of a broader initiative to enhance Algeria’s soft power and influence in the region and internationally. Development of the channel began approximately one year before its launch, with the assembly of a 70-person editorial team comprised of journalists with experience in both Algerian state media and international outlets. The channel operates under the umbrella of Algeria’s public broadcaster, closely tied to the administration of President Abdelmadjid Tebboune.

AL24 News’ programming covers a wide spectrum of topics, including politics, economics, finance, business, health, agriculture, culture, and sports. The channel maintains a digital presence through apps, a YouTube channel, and websites offering live streams and articles, complementing its satellite broadcast. Content is systematically aligned with official Algerian narratives, a characteristic inherent to the country’s public broadcasting system.

The channel’s launch was intended to compete with established international news outlets, such as France 24, offering an alternative perspective on global events. AL24 News is available internationally via Nilesat, a satellite provider serving the Middle East and North Africa.
