Mark Tangney was traveling to Mount Maunganui for a hike when a landslide struck a campsite, prompting him to immediately assist those trapped. He recounted his experience to the New Zealand Herald, detailing the chaotic scene and desperate rescue efforts.
Tangney stated he heard cries for help and rushed toward a toilet block where individuals where pinned inside. “I was one of the first there. There were six or eight other guys there on the roof of the toilet block wiht tools just trying to take the roof off because we coudl here people screaming ‘help us, help us, get us out of here’,” he said.
The landslide occurred on January 29, 2026, at the popular holiday spot, resulting in significant disruption and a large-scale rescue operation. Emergency services responded swiftly to the scene, working alongside volunteers like Tangney to free those who were trapped.
