Stuttgart to Deploy Next-Gen Supercomputer ‘Herder‘ Powered by Zen 6 and AMD MI430X GPUs
Stuttgart, Germany will soon be home to “Herder,” a new supercomputer slated to succeed the current “Hunter” system at the High-Performance Computing Center (HLRS). The forthcoming machine will leverage AMD’s next-generation Zen 6 processors and MI430X accelerator GPUs, promising a important leap in AI productivity through industry-leading compute density.
The new system, expected to be operational by the end of 2027, represents a major investment in European scientific computing infrastructure. Herder will be housed in the newly constructed HLRS III building, adjacent to Hunter, and will utilize 100% water cooling. The waste heat generated by the supercomputer will be repurposed to provide heating for the University of Stuttgart campus, enhancing sustainability.
HPE Cray is building the GX5000 platform for Herder, designed for exceptional density. Each box will contain 112 MI430X GPUs, with 28 blades fitting within a single rack. The system will also incorporate the HPE Cray Storage System E2000 and HPE Slingshot 400 networking.Due to the anticipated availability of the new blades, deployment is planned for late 2027.
