Herder Supercomputer: AMD’s New System for Stuttgart’s HLRS

Stuttgart to⁣ Deploy Next-Gen Supercomputer ‘Herder‘ ‌Powered by Zen ⁤6 and AMD MI430X GPUs

Stuttgart, Germany will ⁤soon be home to “Herder,” a new supercomputer⁢ slated to succeed the current “Hunter” system at the High-Performance Computing Center​ (HLRS). The forthcoming machine will leverage ‌AMD’s next-generation Zen 6‍ processors and MI430X accelerator GPUs, ​promising a important leap in AI productivity through industry-leading compute density.

The new system, expected to be operational by ‌the end of 2027, represents a major investment in European scientific computing⁤ infrastructure. Herder will be housed ⁤in the newly constructed HLRS III building, adjacent to Hunter, and will utilize ‌100% water cooling.‍ The waste heat generated ⁢by‌ the supercomputer will be repurposed to provide ⁤heating for the ⁤University of Stuttgart⁢ campus, enhancing sustainability.

HPE⁢ Cray is building the GX5000 platform ​for Herder,​ designed for exceptional density. Each box ​will contain⁣ 112 MI430X GPUs, with 28 blades fitting within a single rack. The system‍ will also incorporate the HPE Cray Storage System⁤ E2000⁣ and ‌HPE Slingshot 400‌ networking.Due to‌ the anticipated availability‌ of the⁤ new blades, deployment is planned for late‌ 2027.
