OQI Advances Inclusive Quantum Access at Quantum Africa 7
Article by Alexia Yiannouli
OQI is committed to democratizing access to quantum computing, and recently participated in Quantum Africa 7 (September 22-26, 2025) to explore how to ensure equitable benefits from this emerging technology. The event brought together stakeholders from across Africa and the globe to strengthen Africa’s role in the growing global quantum ecosystem through dialog and international collaboration.
OQI hosted a panel discussion, moderated by Applications Advisor Phillip Kammerlander, focused on leveraging international partnerships, educational initiatives, and science diplomacy to ensure all nations can both benefit from and contribute to the “second quantum revolution.” A key focus of the discussion was the upcoming OQI-supported quantum hackathon, planned for 2026 at the Université Mohammed V in Rabat. This hackathon will specifically challenge participants to develop quantum computing use cases aligned with the Enduring Advancement Goals (SDGs).
The panel featured leading experts from Morocco and across the African continent: Fadwa El Ayachi (Université Mohammed V), Mohamed Ouchrif (Université Mohammed I), abdelouahed El Fatimy (school of physics and Engineering, UM6P), and Farai Mazhandu (Africa Quantum Consortium).
Panelists highlighted the growing momentum in the quantum field across Morocco and Africa, driven by new educational programs and expanding national initiatives. They also identified critical gaps, including the need for stronger regional collaboration and formal institutional partnerships to scale efforts and secure funding.
While hackathons where recognized as valuable for identifying and nurturing young quantum talent, panelists emphasized that they are just one piece of the puzzle.Sustained ecosystem building is crucial for truly inclusive access to quantum technology. The 2026 OQI-supported hackathon in Morocco represents a meaningful opportunity to foster local innovation and develop impactful, SDG-focused applications.
OQI looks forward to continued collaboration in Morocco and will share further details about the upcoming hackathon at the Université Mohammed V in 2026.
