Cuban border Patrol Intercepts Boat from Mexico,Detains Two citizens
Cuban border guard forces, working with local police, recently intercepted a boat originating from Mexico near cape San Antonio in the Pinar del Río province. The operation, reported by the Ministry of the Interior (MININT) affiliated Facebook page De Pinar Soy, resulted in the detention of two Cuban citizens.
Authorities stated the individuals, both residing in Mexico, had returned to Cuba with the intention of facilitating an unauthorized maritime departure. They are currently in custody and will face legal charges under Cuban law, which carries penalties for illegal departures from the country.
This interception is part of a broader effort by Cuban authorities to curb illegal migration. In recent months, several boats suspected of being used for illicit outward travel have been confiscated across the country, including vessels found in the Matanzas province and other coastal areas. The MININT previously reported discovering abandoned boats, frequently enough left after unsuccessful attempts at human trafficking.
While acknowledging migration is not inherently criminal when conducted legally, authorities emphasized the difficulties faced by Cubans seeking to emigrate are compounded by restrictions imposed by the United States. The operation took place in a tough-to-access coastal region, according to witnesses cited by De Pinar Soy.
