France officially Enters Flu Epidemic Season as Cases Surge Nationwide
PARIS – France’s annual influenza epidemic has officially begun, with cases reported across teh majority of the country, according to data released today by Public Health France. All regions are currently experiencing epidemic levels of influenza activity, with the notable exception of Corsica. Simultaneously, bronchiolitis,a respiratory illness primarily affecting infants,is spreading rapidly, impacting nearly all of mainland france, while Guadeloupe and Martinique are now categorized as pre-epidemic.
Last season’s flu outbreak was exceptionally severe, resulting in over 17,000 deaths – significantly higher than the typical average of around 10,000. The surge placed a considerable strain on the healthcare system, particularly with a disproportionate number of infants requiring hospitalization. Contributing factors included a lower-than-optimal vaccination rate and diminished vaccine effectiveness, especially among elderly populations. This year’s early indicators suggest a potentially similar trajectory, prompting health officials to proactively address the situation.
The Ministry of Health has responded by releasing strategic vaccine reserves to alleviate concerns among pharmacists reporting dwindling supplies. Vaccination is currently offered free of charge to individuals considered high-risk, including all those over 65, pregnant women, individuals with obesity, and those managing chronic health conditions. Healthcare workers also qualify for free vaccination.
Public Health France reports that current bronchiolitis indicators are “close to those observed the previous season at the same period.” While last year’s bronchiolitis season was relatively mild, the availability of new immunization treatments for infants offers a degree of optimism. Authorities are also monitoring COVID-19 circulation, which remains limited but is showing a “slight upward trend” in wastewater analysis.
Mayotte, an overseas region of France, began experiencing the influenza epidemic last week. Citizens are urged to consult with their healthcare providers regarding vaccination and preventative measures.
